The FDNY releases new PSA urging New Yorkers to stay safe in the kitchen this holiday season

November 21, 2025

As New Yorkers gear up for the 2025 holiday season, the FDNY has released its latest Public Service Announcement (PSA) focused on preventing kitchen fires.

Cooking is the leading cause of home fires, injuries and deaths, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

With holiday gatherings and bustling kitchens on the rise this time of year, the FDNY urges all New Yorkers to stay alert and practice safe cooking habits. Here are a few safety reminders:

  • Never leave cooking food unattended.
  • Turn pot handles inward.
  • Monitor small children and pets.
  • Be mindful of loose or baggy clothing.

The Department's PSA program is made possible in part with support from the FDNY Foundation, the official nonprofit organization of the Department.
