The FDNY releases new PSA reminding New Yorkers to never overload extension cords

November 13, 2025

The FDNY released a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) on Nov. 13, reminding New Yorkers that overloaded extension cords can pose a serious fire threat.

To date, extension cords have sparked more than 50 fires so far in 2025, injuring 27 people and killing five people.

The Department urges New Yorkers to follow electrical safety measures, including:

  • Never overload extension cords.
  • Do NOT use extension cords permanently. They are only for temporary use.
  • Do NOT plug large appliances into extension cords.

The Department's PSA program is made possible in part with support from the FDNY Foundation, the official nonprofit organization of the Department.
