The FDNY welcomed its first class of 2026 probationary firefighters at a graduation ceremony on Thursday, Jul. 2, 2026, at the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn, the final graduating class of firefighters before the 25th anniversary of September 11th.

Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore said: “This graduating class of probationary firefighters is about more than a badge. It’s about carrying forward the legacy of the FDNY. These probationary firefighters carry with them a profound responsibility to honor those who came before them, protect one another, and ensure the promise to never forget lives on through their service.”

Chief of Department John Esposito said: "Today marks an important milestone. You have completed months of demanding training, you have been tested physically and mentally, and you have learned the foundations of this job. You have, what I consider, the greatest job in the world. You are now New York City firefighters."."

Over the course of 18 weeks at the Fire Academy, the probies trained in all aspects of firefighting, including fire suppression and medical response, hazardous materials, collapse and confined space rescues, auto extrication, building inspections and procedures for engine and ladder operations.

The probationary firefighters will be assigned to firehouses throughout New York City, where they will gain field experience under the guidance of senior firefighters and officers.
