If someone near you suddenly collapses, is not breathing, is unresponsive, or has no pulse, they may be in cardiac arrest. You can help save their life.
Get the beat back by pushing hard and fast to the beat of a song, for example, the ones at the start of this FDNY PSA. It doesn't matter the tune or your musical vibes, it just has to be about 120 beats per minute.
Immediately starting CPR, combined with the use of an automated external defibrillator or AED, can restore a normal heart rhythm and save lives.
National CPR and AED Awareness Week runs through June 7.
The FDNY, with help from the FDNY Foundation and other partners, offers free, hands-only CPR classes with the goal of equipping New Yorkers with the basic skills to act in the event of a cardiac arrest emergency.
Early CPR and the use of an AED have shown to dramatically increase the chance of survival in victims who experience sudden cardiac arrest.
FDNY's CPR classes are taught by certified and highly trained EMS members. Since the classes began in 2006, the FDNY Mobile CPR Unit has trained thousands of New Yorkers in hands-only CPR.
