After deadly Bronx fire, the FDNY releases new PSA reminding New Yorkers to 'CLOSE THE DOOR!'

April 24, 2026

The FDNY released a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) on Friday, April 24, 2026, reminding New Yorkers to always close the door behind them in the event of a fire.

Two people died in a 5-alarm fire on April 21 in the Bronx, and an investigation by FDNY fire marshals revealed multiple doors, including the door to the apartment where investigators believe the fire began, were left open.

Closing the door isolates fire and prevents smoke, heat and flames from spreading to common areas of a multiple dwelling (hallways and stairs). In a private home, closing a door to the fire area can prevent rapid spread of fire throughout the structure.

The Department's PSA program is made possible in part with support from the FDNY Foundation, the official nonprofit organization of the Department.
