FDNY releases new PSA about the dangers of lighting fires inside public spaces

February 9, 2026

The FDNY, in collaboration with the New York City Department of Small Business Services' Office of Nightlife, released a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) on Monday, Feb. 9, 2026, reminding New Yorkers that lighting fires inside public spaces is dangerous and illegal.

Public venues, restaurants, bars and clubs must follow the fire code and adhere to occupancy restrictions and safety measures.

As a patron, it's important to know where all exits are located and to leave an establishment immediately if you obseve smoke or fire. Call 311 to report concerns and call 911 if there is an emergency.

Public venues, bars and clubs should:

  • Have working smoke alarms and fire extinguishers.
  • Have multiple marked and unobstructed exits.
  • Consider using laser or LED lights for special effects.

The Department's PSA program is made possible in part with support from the FDNY Foundation, the official nonprofit organization of the Department.
