FDNY releases new PSA for Burn Awareness Week 2026

February 6, 2026

The FDNY released its annual Public Service Announcement (PSA) for Burn Awareness Week 2026, reminding New Yorkers that burns are dangerous and can be deadly if left untreated.

National Burn Awareness Week takes place each year during the first week of February. The 2026 national theme is "Preventing Burns in the Workplace."

Here are some important burn-related safety tips:

  • The three most common burns are caused by water, oil or hot surfaces.
  • Run burns under cool water until the burning process has stopped, sometimes as long as 20 minutes.
  • Do not apply thick ointments to the burn, as they can continue the burning process.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if the burn is larger than 3 inches or the palm of your hand.
  • Turn pot handles inward.
  • Use oven mitts when handling hot items.

The Department's PSA program is made possible in part with support from the FDNY Foundation, the official nonprofit organization of the Department.
