FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker and Department officials gather with Jewish leaders to discuss Passover safety

April 8, 2025

FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker and Department officials met with Jewish community leaders from across New York City on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, to discuss fire safety tips ahead of Passover.

The gathering was held at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn.

"We want everyone to have a happy Passover, and that means being smart when it comes to celebrating," FDNY Commissioner Tucker said. "The FDNY will be out in your community ensuring you have a safe holiday."

This year, Passover begins before sundown on Saturday, April 12, and ends after nightfall on Sunday, April 20.

The FDNY reminds you of the following safety tips:

  • Keep candles at least four feet away from curtains, draperies, decorations, blinds and bedding. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Never leave cooking food unattended.
  • Ensure flammable objects like paper towels, oven mitts, wooden utensils and decorations are kept a safe distance from the stove or any heat source.
  • Prevent spills and accidents by turning pot and pan handles inward so they can't be accidentally bumped or grabbed.
