On Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2025, Mayor Eric Adams appointed Mark Guerra as the 36th FDNY Commissioner at Gracie Mansion in Manhattan. He will lead the Department into the new year and a new administration for New York City.
Commissioner Guerra is a 37-year veteran of the FDNY. He began his career as a firefighter assigned to Engine 237/Ladder 124 in Brooklyn. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1994 and worked at Ladder 112 in Brooklyn. In 2002, Commissioner Guerra was promoted to captain and served in Engine 214 in Brooklyn. In 2019, he was promoted to battalion chief and assigned to Battalion 35.
Commissioner Guerra also served as the executive officer to FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro and was promoted to First Deputy Commissioner to FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker.
