As part of the nationwide 2025 Great American Smokeout, the FDNY is encouraging all New Yorkers to quit smoking, a change proven to drastically reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and premature death.
Each year, FDNY members respond to thousands of cardiac arrest incidents across the five boroughs. Smoking remains one of the leading risk factors and preventable contributors to cardiac emergencies.
"Each day, our EMS members respond to life-threatening cardiac events that might have been prevented. Smoking is still one of the most dangerous choices a person can make for their heart and their long-term health," FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said. "The Great American Smokeout is a reminder that quitting can prevent tragedy, protect families and save lives. We want every New Yorker, and every member of the Department, to know that support is available and that change is possible."
The FDNY continues to promote smoking cessation resources to its workforce, including counseling, nicotine-replacement therapies, and access to medical support through its Bureau of Health Services.
The Department encourages everyone to take action today as part of a collective effort to prevent avoidable emergencies across New York City.
The Great American Smokeout takes place annually on the third Thursday in November.
