Fire Commissioner Robert S. Tucker to Preside Over Graduation Ceremony for 326 Probationary Firefighters

Class includes two 9/11 legacies, six women, and 37 veterans

The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) Commissioner Robert S. Tucker will preside over the graduation ceremony of 326 Probationary Firefighters on Wednesday, May 14 at 10 a.m. at the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn. This graduating class of Probationary Firefighters represents the increasing diversity of the Department, with people of color comprising 48% of the class. 28% identify as Hispanic, 17% as Black, and 3% as Asian American. The class includes six women and 37 veterans from the Marine Corps, Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Air Force. Two Probationary Firefighters are legacies, children of FDNY members who made the Supreme Sacrifice in the line of duty or have died due to World Trade Center related illnesses. 

Over 18 weeks at the FDNY Training Academy, the probies trained in all aspects of Firefighting: fire suppression and medical response, hazardous materials, collapse and confined space rescue training, auto extrication, building inspections and procedures for engine and ladder operations.

These Probationary Firefighters will be assigned to firehouses throughout the city, where they will gain field experience under the guidance of senior firefighters and officers.
