FDNY Holds Line of Duty Death Plaque Dedication Ceremony for Lieutenant Joseph Maiello

Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh will preside over the plaque dedication ceremony to honor Lieutenant Joseph Maiello on Saturday, January 7, at 10 a.m. at Engine Company 163/Ladder Company 83 at 875 Jewett Avenue, Staten Island. The ceremony can be viewed live on the Department’s website at www.nyc.gov/FDNY.

Lieutenant Maiello, 53, from Staten Island, was discovered unconscious and pronounced dead while on-duty at his firehouse – Engine Company 163 and Ladder 83 – on Sunday, December 26, 2021.

Lt. Maiello was appointed to the FDNY in August 1999, and first assigned to Ladder Company 148 in Brooklyn. On September 11, Lt. Maiello responded to the World Trade Center and survived the collapse of the North Tower. He then took part in the rescue and recovery effort in the months that followed. He was promoted to Lieutenant in February 2020 and assigned to Battalion 23 on Staten Island. He was most recently assigned to Ladder Company 83 on Staten Island, where he was serving at the time of his death.

Lieutenant Maiello was the 1,155th member of the FDNY to die in the line-of-duty.
