Safety Training for City Staff and Facility Managers

DSNY  has developed a series of training classes to assist staff in the handling of certain wastes and facilitate the usage of a unique citywide contract. This training is part of the city's Agency Safe Handling Program.

All staff and facility managers who handle the storage and disposal of universal and electronic waste, such as light bulbs, computer equipment, and rechargeable batteries ARE REQUIRED BY LAW to be trained on these products' safe handling. A series of safety training classes are being offered online for the following groups of NYC employees:

  • Facility managers responsible for the oversight of the disposal of universal and/or electronic waste.
  • Facility staff engaged in the disposal and recycling of universal and/or electronic waste.
  • IT staff engaged in the disposal and recycling of electronic waste and/or batteries.

Each course is designed to focus on the unique roles that staff play in the disposal and recycling of designated waste products. These courses have been certified by the New York City College of Technology.

Training Guide

The online safety courses were developed to train NYC Agency staff in the proper procedures for handling universal and electronics waste in advance of the mandatory citywide audit program implemented to be compliant with the EPA consent agreement. Although the City has successfully completed the mandatory audits, City Agencies must continue to abide by the rules and regulations related to the handling and disposal of universal and electronics waste.

City Agencies are strongly advised to incorporate the concepts explained in the online safety training into their orientation training for new staff responsible for handling these types of waste products.
