Starting Sept. 8, Residential Properties with 1 to 9 Units Must Use Official NYC Bins or Face $50 Fines

NYC Bins are available for sale at all Home Depot stores in the five boroughs

NYC Bins are by far the most affordable bins available of comparable quality, and eligible homeowners can be reimbursed for their purchase through Sept. 8

The NYC Department of Sanitation today reminded homeowners and owners of buildings with up to nine residential units that the warning period for failing to use NYC Bins to set out trash ends on Labor Day. Starting Sept. 8, DSNY will issue summonses and $50 fines to those who do not use NYC Bins to set out their trash.

NYC Bins have been available for sale for more than two years, and they remain in stock at every Home Depot store in the five boroughs. These bins are rodent-resistant and compatible with mechanical tippers being added to the backs of DSNY’s rear-loading collection trucks, making trash collection easier and safer for Sanitation Workers.

Bins of all sizes and colors are available for purchase at Home Depot stores, but an official NYC Bin is required for trash setout only. Compostable material can be set out in any bin that is properly marked with a lid, and recyclable materials can be set out in any container, or in a clear or blue plastic bag.

Through the use of a concession agreement for which the city received several bids, NYC Bins are also cheaper by far than other bins of similar quality. The city continues to reimburse eligible homeowners for the cost of one official 45-gallon NYC Bin. Owners of one- and two-family homes who received the School Tax Relief (STAR) property tax exemption or credit in 2024 or 2025 are eligible to request reimbursement through September 8th.
