October is Safe Sleep Awareness Month. This year, the NYC Infant Safe Sleep Initiative proudly marks a decade of action focused on protecting New York City babies from preventable sleep-related infant deaths.
The Initiative is a diverse, public/private partnership dedicated to safeguarding infants while they sleep by using evidence-based practices, policies, and guidelines developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics. In 2015, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio expanded the scope of this life-saving work by funding a dedicated team of professionals to spearhead citywide outreach, training, and awareness efforts designed to reach more parents and caregivers with safe sleep messages. This investment resulted in the formation of a vibrant coalition led by NYC Children’s Services, and involving 130 city, state, and community partners – all focused on one goal: ensuring that no family suffers the devastating loss of a child during sleep.
Michele Maye, Executive Director of the NYC Infant Safe Sleep Initiative shares more about this life-saving work and planned activities for October 2020.
Registration for the 2020 Summit is now closed.

In 2020, the NYC Infant Safe Sleep Initiative marks an important milestone – 10 years of citywide outreach, advocacy, and training to help parents and caregivers understand how to protect their babies during sleep.
Across the city, there are many caring individuals, organizations, agencies, community leaders, and advocates who have advanced safe sleep policies and practices that help protect New York City babies. During this milestone year, we recognize a few of these outstanding ambassadors for their deep commitment to this mission.
