Rehabilitation Medicine
Queens Hospital Center is one of only three hospitals in the borough of Queens featuring acute rehabilitation services. We are the choice for you or someone you care about who has a disabling illness or trauma requiring inpatient rehabilitation. Rehabilitation is often the first step towards independence: our goals are to maximize functional independence so that patients can smoothly transition to homes, sub-acute or outpatient rehabilitation services.
Our comprehensive rehab services are accredited by The Joint Commission, and we earned the Excellence in Achievement award twice by Uniform Data System (UDS). Our rehabilitation unit is backed by years of commitment. Our physiatrists are all board-certified with years of experience. Our nurses and therapists have vast experience and some have been employed here for more than 20 years. We all share QHC’s mission of providing quality, comprehensive care and are dedicated to ensuring every patient makes the fullest possible recovery, with 88 percent of our inpatients being discharged to homes.
Our excellent outcomes are a result of expert, experienced disciplinary care provided by a wide range of specialties such as physical therapists, occupational therapists, a social worker, audiologists, psychologists, a pharmacist, dieticians and chaplain. Specialized physician services include surgeons, internists, orthopedists, radiologists and pulmonologists.
Individualized treatment is our cornerstone. We provide six days a week of therapy, with a minimum of three hours of therapy, six days per week for less intensive therapy. Highly skilled therapy staff evaluations for any specialized equipment such as wheelchair and braces, specialized beds, and seating equipment also are provided. Outpatient and follow-up care take place when patients are discharged.
Highlights of our facility include:
- Intensive training in practical daily skills: dressing, showering, feeding, wheelchair management
- Accommodations with just one or two patients per room with bathroom
- Patient and family education
- Community integration activities
- Continuity and coordinated outpatient care
- Access to highly specialized services and physicians
- Home care services including home health aides, physical and occupational therapists and outpatient services; equipment is provided as needed
We offer a comprehensive outpatient service that encompasses continuum of care and helps to bridge the gap between inpatient acute hospital stay and discharge to home.
Physician evaluations, physical and occupational therapy services are provided for conditions such as arthritis, back pain, shoulder pain, elbow pain, wrist pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, knee pain and ankle pain radiating from either arthritis or trauma or other orthopedic conditions such as fractures.
Electrodiagnostic services are provided on a limited basis for diagnoses such as CTS, peripheral neuropathy, and radiculopathy. Durable medical equipment such as TENS units, wheelchairs, tub showers and other devices to aid in daily activity is provided on an outpatient basis. Orthotic and prosthetic services are offered on an as-needed basis. Prosthetic devices for amputees and braces for stroke patients and other neurological conditions are provided.
Outpatient pediatric evaluations are done by a board-certified pediatric physiatrist. Therapy and equipment are provided as needed.
Queens Hospital Center Rehabilitation is affiliated with the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and some of our doctors are previous graduates of Mount Sinai. Should the need arise, patients have access to our sister facility, Elmhurst Hospital Center, which has a full range of medical and surgical services.
