Behavioral Health
The Behavioral Health Center of Excellence of Queens Hospital exists to meet the mental health needs of the Queens community. We take pride in identifying the needs of each individual and offer a full spectrum of services to meet these needs at all levels of care. Our mission is to restore a person’s mental and physical well-being in a professional and compassionate manner.
These are some features of the behavioral healthcare services in our Center of Excellence:
Multidisciplinary, professional staff.
Our multicultural staff consists of nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, case workers, case managers and activity therapists – all fully credentialed, licensed and carefully screened. All patients are treated in a respectful and dignified manner and we strive to maintain cultural sensitivity in all of our interactions.
Individualized treatment.
All patients are evaluated by a mental health professional when they present to any of our programs. Our professional staff works as a team with each patient to complete a full assessment and develop a treatment plan best suited to each patient’s needs. There are professional staff members in all programs and a variety of services available to ensure that the highest quality care is delivered.
Experienced, caring physicians.
Experienced, compassionate doctors work with our patients to restore their health and improve functioning, using the most effective medications and treatment modalities.
Knowledgeable social workers and counselors.
Social workers, case workers and counselors work together with the team to ensure that the patient receives comprehensive care. Family work is an important component of treatment. Our social workers take pride in their work with their patients and their families in educating them about the patient’s illness and treatment plan.
Compassionate nursing staff.
Our nurses are experienced professionals with specialized training in psychiatric care. They are actively involved with patients at all levels of care and are known for the kindness and respect with which they treat our patients. They are an integral part of all of our services and participate actively in developing and implementing appropriate treatment plans for patients at all levels of care,
Accomplished psychologists. Psychologists conduct psychotherapy groups and meet with patients individually, as needed. Specialized psychological and neuropsychological assessments are available to aid in diagnosis and treatment. Learn about the Queens Hospital Center Psychology externship program.
Activity therapy.
We offer a broad array of therapeutic activities to help our patients recover from their illnesses and develop plans for rehabilitation. The activity therapists utilize art, music, drama, cognitive skill-building and socialization to help restore health and provide a sense of well-being. Vocational assessments are also available to assist in the rehabilitation process.
Continuum of care.
Each person’s treatment plan also includes an aftercare plan to ensure they always receive the level of care they need. Social workers and case managers help patients keep appointments, take their medication and stay on their treatment plan.
Teaching partnerships.
We collaborate with the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, York College, Stony Brook University and Saint George’s University School of Medicine. Training programs are in place in psychology, social work, nursing and many other areas.
