Bariatric Center of Excellence
Harlem Hospital Center was approved by the Surgical Review Corporation of the American College of Surgeons as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. We have also been designated as a Bariatric Surgery Center for Medicaid and Medicare Patients. Harlem Hospital Center is one of five hospitals in New York City, and the only HHC facility, to receive this CMS Designation.

As a Bariatric Specialty Center, the Hospital's specialty services will include surgical procedures performed to treat severe obesity and obesity-related health problems. These designations tell the world that patients referred to Harlem Hospital Center will be treated by the most experienced providers, receive the best care and have the best outcomes. For more information call the Bariatric clinic at (212) 939- 8370.

Baby Friendly
In 2009, Harlem Hospital Center was proud to earn the designation as the First Baby Friendly Hospital in New York City. Harlem Hospital Center has joined other pioneering birth facilities across the United States to assist pregnant women and new mothers in one of the most rewarding experiences of motherhood-breastfeeding.

We have been recognized as a leader by Baby Friendly USA for declaring our commitment to the principles of the global Baby-Friendly Initiative and establishing the highest standard possible for the protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding.

We are proud to be the first Hospital in New York City who has met the World Health Organization's standards to join this worldwide effort to offer the best possible start to our newborn patients and their families. For more information about the Baby friendly Program, contact Alison Benjamin at (212) 939 - 4644

Medina Clinic
The Medina Clinic is the first of its kind in New York City, to provide comprehensive primary care, health education, and outreach screening with the cultures and languages of the Islamic Community in mind. The Medina Clinic is, of course, open to people of all cultures and everyone from the Harlem community is welcome to visit the Medina Clinic to receive first-class culturally sensitive care.

The goal of the Medina Clinic is to reach a population that typically doesn't seek medical treatment, and ultimately fully integrate them into Harlem Hospital Center's network of services. The Medina Clinic is an extension of the Harlem Hospital Center's Department of Ambulatory Care, which provides services throughout the week, with extended evening and weekend hours.

The clinic is operated with grant funded assistance from the New York State Health Foundation, The HHC Foundation of New York City and the Avon Foundation. Consistent with the Foundations objectives, the project provides services that are needed for the State's most vulnerable populations. The expected outcome is to establish a replicable clinic model that will provide appropriate health care services consistent with the cultural and religious practices of the Harlem Muslim residents.
