Santa Makes Early Stop at Metropolitan Hospital Center!
Metropolitan hosted its annual Children's Holiday Party on Saturday, December 21, bringing the joy of the holiday season to nearly 1,300 children. Santa distributed presents gathered from various gift/toy drives organized by volunteers, community members and hospital staff. Clowns, performers and a face-painting artist were also on hand to entertain the children, who recieve outpatient care at the hospital throughout the year. "The Children's Holiday Party is a wonderful opportunity to bring joy and laughter into lives of many children in our hospital community," said Elizabeth Guzman, Acting Executive Director at Metropolitan Hospital Center. "We are so grateful to the sponsors of this event and to all of the organizations that support toy drives for our Pediatrics Department. Their spirit of giving and sharing helps make the holiday season special to our patients and their families." The Children's Holiday Party is presented in collaboration with the Metropolitan Hospital Center Auxiliary.
Learn With Us: HIV - Past, Present & Future
In commemoration of World AIDS Day, Theodore H. Lenox, MD, AAHIVS, provided an overview of HIV -- its prevalence, diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment -- on Monday, December 2. Dr. Lenox discussed the history of HIV/AIDS, prevention, current treatment, future concerns as well as available resources and support. Dr. Lenox is Chief of Infectious Disease at Metropolitan Hospital Center and Assistant Professor, Internal Medicine, at New York Medical College. The presentation was part of Learn With Us, Metropolitan's monthly series on important health topics.
Metropolitan Awarded Grant at Avon Walk for Breast Cancer
MAS Program staff receive grant award from the Avon Foundation for Women.
The Metropolitan + Avon + Supporting the Safety Net (MAS) Program, which works year-round to connect women at risk to diagnostic, treatment and support services, received one of ten grants awarded at the 11th Annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, on October 20, 2013. The grant helps ensure access to quality breast cancer care, regardless of a person’s insurance status or ability to pay. Metropolitan patients, volunteers, and staff were also among the nearly 3,000 participants who walked in Central Park to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. View Press Release
Metropolitan Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Metropolitan Hospital celebrated the diversity of our patients, staff, and community at the annual Hispanic Heritage Month festival on Friday, October 4. The event, sponsored by MetroPlus, included a special health fair and cultural festival, featuring health education and screenings, exhibits, music, dancing, and community vendors.
Learn With Us: Let's Talk About Autism
On October 3, Dr. Vidya B. Gupta presented an overview on autism -- its prevalence, diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment. Attendees learned about the dramatic rise in autism cases, signs and symptoms, therapies/interventions, as well as available resources and support. Faculty from The Shield Institute and representatives from Autism Speaks also participated in the event. Dr. Gupta is an Attending Neurodevelopmental Pediatrician at Metropolitan Hospital Center, and Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at New York Medical College. The lecture was part of Learn With Us, Metropolitan's monthly series of free lectures on important health topics.
La Clínica del Barrio Celebrate 15 Years!
On Thursday, September 19, the Metropolitan Hospital Family Health Center, known as La Clínica del Barrio, celebrated 15 years of providing high quality medical services in a neighborhood setting. The health fair and celebration, held at La Clínica at 413 East 120th Street (between First and Pleasant Avenues), featured health information and screenings, music, and fun for the whole family.
The Power of Aging Well Annual Health Festival
Over six hundred seniors filled Thomas Jefferson Park on Thursday, September 5, for the Power of Aging Well Annual Health Festival, organized by the hospital's outreach team and presented in collaboration with NYC Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito, the NYC Department for the Aging, and MetroPlus Health Plan. Staff from Geriatrics, Nursing, HIV Services, Family Planning, Dental, Smoking Cessation, MAS, Dietary, and La Clinica del Barrio provided glucose, blood pressure and BMI screenings, as well as medical consultations with residents, and information on the vast array of services offered at Metropolitan. They were joined by representatives from over thirty community-based organizations who shared information on services for seniors. Attendees enjoyed arts and crafts, aerobics, and live entertainment performed by members of senior centers throughout Manhattan. Special thanks to all who helped make the event a success.
Family Day Annual Health Fair

Metropolitan Hospital Center hosted its annual Family Day Health Fair on Saturday, August 3, on East 106th Street between Lexington and Third Avenues. Hospital staff and our local community partners provided health information, screenings and entertainment for the whole family. The festival is presented in collaboration with MetroPlus.
Metropolitan Named Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality
Metropolitan Hospital Center has been recognized as a Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality in the Healthcare Equality Index 2013, an annual survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organization. Metropolitan Hospital Center earned top marks for its commitment to equitable, inclusive care for LGBT patients and their families, who can face significant challenges in securing adequate healthcare. Learn With Us: What All Men Should Know
On June 27, Dr. Gerald Matthews presented an informative overview of health issues for men of all ages. Dr. Matthews discussed general health tips, prostate health, exercise, reproductive health, the role of testosterone, and the importance of regular checkups. Participants learned about preventive care, common urological procedures, and new developments in the field of men’s health. The presentation was part of Learn With Us, Metropolitan's monthly series of free lectures on important health topics. Dr. Matthews is Chief of Urology at Metropolitan Hospital and Assistant Professor at New York Medical College.
Metropolitan Hospital Celebrates Cinco de Mayo
Metropolitan Hospital Center hosted a special Cinco de Mayo Health Fair, on Friday, May 3. Representatives from the Mexican Consulate joined hospital staff and community based organizations at the event, which was sponsored by Healthfirst. Attendees enjoyed mariachis, a live DJ, and face painting, and took advantage of a wide range of valuable health information, including blood pressure and glucose screenings. View Flyer
Learn With Us: Diabetes Lecture
On April 25, 2013, Jonna Mercado, MD, presented a Diabetes Lecture at Metropolitan Hospital part of Metropolitan's Learn With Us educational series. Dr. Mercado provided an overview on Diabetes Mellitus, its diagnosis, symptoms, management and common complications. Attendees learned about blood glucose, HbA1c levels and how to live a healthy life with Diabetes. Dr. Mercado shared information on nutrition, exercise, lifestyle factors, and the importance of early detection. Dr. Mercado is an Attending Physician at Metropolitan Hospital and Assistant Professor of Medicine at New York Medical College. View Flyer

The Metropolitan Hospital Auxiliary hosted its 2013 Spring Gala on Thursday, April 10, with a cocktail reception, and a fun, interactive evening of bowling and billiards at Frames Bowling Lounge. NY1 News reporter Dean Meminger attended the event, and bowled with some of the hospital’s cancer patients and staff. The fundraising event supported the establishment of a state-of-the-art cancer center at Metropolitan Hospital Center. For more information about the Auxiliary, click here. The Community Advisory Board (CAB) of Metropolitan Hospital Center hosted local elected officials, their representatives, healthcare advocates, and community residents at its annual legislative breakfast on Friday, March 22. Congressman Charles Rangel and New York State Assembly Member Robert Rodriguez reported on how public health issues are being addressed by the federal and state government, respectively. Metropolitan Welcomes Our First Baby of 2013
Mother Jennifer and baby Jeremiah celebrate 2013 with staff from Metropolitan Hospital Center.
Jennifer Thomas welcomed her son Jeremiah at Metropolitan Hospital Cener on New Year's Day. Born on January 1 at 5:58 AM and weighing in at 7 lbs. 1.6 oz, Jeremiah was the first baby born at Metropoiltan in the New Year. Both mother and child are doing well. We wish them, their family, and all of our Metropolitan babies an abundance of health and happiness. Happy New Year to all!
