Stroke Prevention and Care

A stroke is caused by a blood clot to the brain. When strokes occur, patients require rapid care to prevent disability or death. At our Stroke Centers, patients receive excellent care, rapid diagnosis and effective treatment.

Designated Stroke Centers in New York City

Many of our facilities are designated as official Stroke Centers by the New York State Health Department. This means our dedicated stroke team is specially trained in stroke diagnosis and treatment, so we can provide the urgent care you need. Ambulances are directed to bring stroke patients directly to a Stroke Center, if they are located within 20 minutes of one.

Rapid Care for Stroke Victims

If you have a stroke and arrive at the hospital within three hours from the beginning of the symptoms, our doctors may give you a “clot-busting” drug that can undo the clot’s damage. Know the signs of a stroke and call 911 if you suspect you may be experiencing a stroke. Signs and symptoms include:

  • Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg on one side of the body
  • Confusion or difficulty speaking or understanding
  • Trouble walking
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of balance
  • Severe unexplained headache

Our Stroke Centers of Excellence operate 24/7. We provide rapid testing, analysis and treatment, giving you the best chance for complete recovery.
