Hurricane Sandy taught New York City that it is important to be prepared at all times, and Hurricane Ida taught us that heavy rain events can be as lethal to inland communities as Sandy was to coastal ones.
The Mayor’s Office of Housing Recovery Operations (HRO) works together with other City agencies to prepare our neighborhoods and residents for the next disaster, providing the information you need to be safe and resilient.
For individual preparedness, HRO works with NYC Emergency Management (EM) and our federal and state partners to share information that will help you understand your home’s risk and what steps you can take to mitigate it. Visit EM’s Get Prepared page for information and tips on how to make a disaster preparedness plan that best suits your needs and the needs of your household.

To help the city prepare for the impact of increased and more frequent rainfall, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has developed a citywide Rainfall Ready NYC Action Plan. DEP has also created a Rainfall Ready NYC: Homeowner’s Guide with tips for protecting your home from flooding and sewer backups. Also, please visit the website of the Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice for information on Chronic Tidal Flooding, Coastal Surge Flooding and Extreme Rainfall.
