Mayor Bill de Blasio and Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro will preside at the annual FDNY Medal Day Ceremony on Wednesday, June 5th at 11 a.m. at City Hall Plaza – Centre Street and Park Row. At the ceremony, 67 awards will be presented to FDNY Firefighters, Paramedics, EMTs, Fire Marshals and Officers for their life-saving work in the last year.
Notable medal recipients include:
- Lieutenant Patrick T. Mataraza of Ladder Company 56 will receive the James Gordon Bennett Medal and NYS Honorary Fire Chiefs Association Medal for saving a young child and two other individuals trapped in a fire in the Bronx.
- Paramedic Jacqueline J. Benel of EMS Station 14 will receive the Christopher J. Prescott Medal for helping to evacuate residents while responding to a medical call in a Bronx building.
- Paramedic Jonathan T. Rivera of Station 20 will receive two medals; Rivera, along with Paramedic Christopher G. Chaplin, will receive the Chief James Scullion Medal for rescuing a NYPD officer trapped in a trench at Rodman's Neck and Paramedic Rivera along with Paramedic Usman M. Rahyab will receive the Jack Pintchik Medal for rescuing a patient in the Bronx on a live railroad track.
- Firefighters from Ladder Company 161 will receive the World Trade Center Memorial Medal for their brave efforts to rescue two young children, several disabled people, and two adults during a fire in Brooklyn.
