FDNY Sept. 11 Health Impacts

The September 11th Health Impact publications document the long-term health effects experienced by FDNY members and other first responders following the attacks on September 11, 2001. During the months-long rescue-and-recovery efforts, thousands of FDNY members were exposed to hazardous dust, smoke and toxins at the World Trade Center site.

In the years since the attacks, the FDNY has conducted extensive medical monitoring and research to better understand the physical and mental health impacts associated with this exposure. These reports provide critical data on conditions impacting firefighters, EMTs, paramedics and civilian personnel.

These publications help researchers, policymakers and the public better understand the long-term consequences and have played an important role in shaping treatment programs, health monitoring initiatives and federal legislation supporting those affected by the attacks.
