Youth homelessness is pervasive, youth experiencing homelessness do not engage with the system in the same ways as their adult counterparts. Youth do not access shelter and other homeless resources as readily. Therefore, the prevalence of homelessness with this population is difficult to track.
The annual NYC Youth Count is conducted to obtain information on the real housing experiences of youth and young adults. It is an extension of the citywide HOPE Count which is an effort to determine New Yorkers’ housing situation. During that time, Runaway and Homeless Youth staff, youth service providers and volunteers will ask young people between the ages of 14 and 24 to participate in a short anonymous survey.
The NYC Youth Count will be conducted in with partnered youth-serving programs, including educational programs, community centers, workforce programs, emergency shelters, drop-in centers, outreach teams, and other programs. There will also be an opportunity to participate in virtual tabling sessions available as well!
