Fear of Falling

A fear of falling is common, even among those who have not had a fall, and it can actually increase your risk of a fall. Older adults may avoid physical and social activities because they are afraid they might fall. That can lead to muscle weakness, social isolation, anxiety and depression. All of these factors increase the risk of falling.

There are steps you can take to manage a fear of falling:

  • Assess your fear of falling by taking the survey (PDF). 
  • Talk to your doctor about your survey results and ask questions about preventing falls. Work with your doctor to make a personal fall prevention plan.
  • Get support by talking about your fear withyour case worker, social worker, physical or occupational therapist, caregiver, family members or friends.
  • Stay physically active by getting regular exercise.
  • Stay socially active. Enjoy your regular social activities and hobbies as much as possible. You can also take part in activities at your local senior center or volunteer your time.
  • Prepare your home in case you do fall bytaking a few precautions that can help you feel more confident in an emergency.
