Commissioner Richards Appoints Sherrieann Rembert to Chief of Department

Chief Rembert will serve as the highest-ranking uniformed member of the Department

EAST ELMHURST, NY — Correction Commissioner Stanley Richards has appointed Sherrieann Rembert as Chief of Department, effective March 11. In this role, Chief Rembert will supervise nearly 6,000 uniformed members of service in the Department of Correction, including Assistant Chiefs, Wardens, Deputy Wardens-in-Command, Deputy Wardens, Assistant Deputy Wardens, Captains and Correction Officers.

The Chief of Department also supports the Commissioner’s executive team by overseeing facility operations, including ensuring that policies and procedures pertaining to the care of people in custody are adhered to.

“Our uniformed staff are essential to the safe and efficient operation of our jails and are the foundation of this agency,” said NYC Correction Commissioner Stanley Richards. “As a valued leader in this Department, Chief Rembert’s experience and insight are second to none. I look forward to her guidance and expertise as we move this Department forward.”

“As someone who has served this Department and risen through its ranks, I have seen the best of what this agency can do,” said Chief of Department Rembert. “I look forward to our continued growth as a department and to implementing innovations that will set the standard for correctional excellence.”

Chief Rembert has served in a variety of senior leadership roles with the DOC, most recently as Bureau Chief/Chief of Staff (2024–2026) and Assistant Chief of Administration (2021–2024).

Prior to joining the DOC, Chief Rembert served in the Armed Forces Reserve and was deployed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. She began her career with the Department as a Correction Officer in 1997. Her first assigned command was the James A. Thomas Center (JATC). In October 2005, she was promoted to the rank of Captain and transferred to the George Motchan Detention Center (GMDC).

Chief Rembert demonstrated an exceptional aptitude for administration and was subsequently transferred to the Chief of Department’s Office, where she served as an executive officer from 2016 to 2017.

In 2017, she was promoted to Deputy Warden and assigned to the Otis Bantum Correctional Center (OBCC). During her tenure at OBCC, she implemented the Sustainability, Expectation, Accountability, Tour, Train, Teach (S.E.A.T.) initiative to boost morale and reduce violence.

In July 2019, Rembert served as Acting Warden of the Criminal Justice Bureau, where she was responsible for all court commands and the Transportation Division. In February 2020, she was promoted to Warden of the Criminal Justice Bureau.

She holds a Master of Science in Cyber Security from Southern New Hampshire University, a Bachelor of Science in Correction Administration from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and an Associate of Applied Science in Human Services from New York City Technical College.
