Notification of a Death in Custody


Statement from NYC Correction Commissioner Stanley Richards:

“I am absolutely devastated that we have lost someone in our care and this tragedy is felt by every member of service. On behalf of myself and the Department, I share my deepest condolences with his loved ones. This incident will be investigated.”


Background from the NYC Department of Correction:

At 10:54 a.m. today, staff were alerted by a person in the Department’s care that Umais Khan, 40, was lying in bed but would not wake up. DOC staff immediately performed CPR until medical staff arrived minutes later.

Aid was provided but Mr. Khan could not be revived. He was pronounced deceased at 11:21 a.m.


The Department has notified the Remediation Manager, Federal Monitor, the Board of Correction, the State Attorney General’s Office, the City Department of Investigation, the State Commission of Correction, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, the New York and Bronx District Attorneys and the individual’s attorney.
