THE NEW YORK CITY CORRECTION DEPARTMENT SWEARS IN MORE THAN 200 NEW RECRUITS

The Incoming Class Will Spend the Next 17 Weeks Learning De-escalation Techniques, Conflict Resolution, CPR, Fire Safety, Suicide and Overdose Prevention, and More

East Elmhurst, NY — The New York City Department of Correction today swore in a class of more than 200 recruit correction officers.

“Our incoming recruits are part of an exciting future for this agency — one that puts people first,” said NYC Correction Commissioner Stanley Richards. “We are looking forward to working with these recruit officers over the course of their training and to help them develop the skills that will create safer, more supportive facilities. With their oath, they are taking the first step toward building better futures for our city.”

After being sworn in, the recruits will take advantage of the Department’s ongoing partnership with the NYPD and have the opportunity to train at its state-of-the-art facility in College Point.

Training will include instruction from nationally recognized corrections professionals on de-escalation techniques, conflict resolution, suicide prevention, defensive tactics, law, jail procedures, firearms, CPR, fire safety, and more.

The Department’s training program continues to evolve, with new curricula recently added that focus on building trust, effective leadership, trauma-informed leadership, and procedural justice.

Upon completing Academy training, the recruits will graduate and be sworn in as Correction Officers. Their training will then continue for several more weeks on Rikers Island, where they will participate in an immersive field training program under the guidance and mentorship of veteran officers.
