Notification of a Death in Custody

Statement from NYC Correction Commissioner Stanley Richards:

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy, and we share our condolences with Mr. Pagan’s loved ones. We will investigate the circumstances of this death in coordination with city and state authorities.”

Background from the NYC Department of Correction:

Following Julian Pagan’s arraignment at the Bronx courts, he was found unresponsive in a holding cell, shortly before 6 p.m. Medical aid was provided and Mr. Pagan, 29, was transported to Lincoln Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 6:37 p.m.

The Department has notified the Remediation Manager, Federal Monitor, the Board of Correction, the State Attorney General’s Office, the City Department of Investigation, the State Commission of Correction, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, the Bronx District Attorney and Mr. Pagan's attorney.
