Statement from NYC Correction Commissioner Stanley Richards:
“As Commissioner, and as a Department, we place the safety and support of those in our care at the center of everything we do. This tragedy weighs heavily on me and on every member of this Department. I extend my deepest condolences to his loved ones. Our sorrow over his loss is immeasurable.”
Background from the NYC Department of Correction:
On the morning of March 25, at the George R. Vierno Center, a correction officer discovered Barry Cozart, 39 years old, in need of medical aid. The staff member called for assistance and performed CPR. Tragically, Mr. Cozart could not be revived and he was pronounced deceased at 11:33 a.m.
The Department has notified the federal monitor; the Board of Correction; the State Attorney General’s Office; the City Department of Investigation; the State Commission of Correction; the Office of Chief Medical Examiner; and the Bronx and Queens district attorneys.
