DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION SWORE IN THIS YEAR’S SECOND CLASS OF CORRECTION OFFICER RECRUITS

Department Continues Partnership with NYPD and Successful Field Training Program

Department of Correction Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie welcomed a new class of Correction Officer Recruits at a swearing-in ceremony held at the New York City Police Academy at 130-30 28th Avenue in Queens at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2024

“We were thrilled to welcome 95 new members into our Bold Family! They are committing to a life of public service, and we look forward to seeing them evolve over the next 13 weeks,” said Commissioner Maginley-Liddie. “The rigorous training these recruits are about to embark on will prepare them to have successful careers as New York’s Boldest.”

The department’s ongoing partnership with the NYPD will allow these new recruits to train in their state-of-the-art facility for 13 weeks. There, the new recruits will receive rigorous training from nationally recognized training staff in topics including de-escalation tactics and techniques, conflict resolution, suicide prevention, physical training and conditioning, law, jail procedure, firearms, and life-saving topics such as CPR, Narcan, and fire safety.

Upon completion of their 13 weeks of training at the NYPD facility, the training experience will relocate to facilities on Rikers Island for an 8-week field training program, where the new recruits will receive a hands-on experience in the jails from field training officers. This immersive training model is how the department is instilling proper correctional practices, improving training, and making its jails safer for our officers, civilian staff, and people in custody.
