NYC Department of Correction Notification of a Death in Custody


Statement from NYC Correction Commissioner Stanley Richards:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Rodriguez. Our entire Department mourns his loss. We share our deepest condolences to Mr. Rodriguez’s loved ones during this difficult time. We will conduct a thorough investigation in coordination with the appropriate city and state authorities.”

Background from the NYC Department of Correction:

Mr. Christopher Rodriguez, age 36, was observed to be in medical distress in his housing area at the Outposted Therapeutic Housing Unit at Bellevue and was pronounced deceased at approximately 8:39 am this morning.

The Department has notified the Remediation Manager, Federal Monitor, the Board of Correction, the State Attorney General’s Office, the City Department of Investigation, the State Commission of Correction, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn District Attorneys and Mr. Rodriguez 's attorney.

Mr. Rodriguez self-reported his race as Black.
