The Department of Homeless Services' (DHS) Office of Communications & External Affairs works with all divisions to promote the agency's internal and external communications. In addition to producing content for agency distribution, including brochures and newsletters, the unit also responds to inquiries from a variety of local and national media outlets.

The unit also serves as a liaison between the agency and City constituents, government representatives, and politicians-working with 59 community boards to inform neighborhoods of relevant issues and concerns as they transpire. By developing solid relationships with elected officials and community groups, DHS can raise awareness about the issue of homelessness and further its mission throughout the five boroughs of New York City.
