For general information about hiking, please visit Hiking.
Can I hike around the reservoirs?
No. The reservoirs, their shorelines, and adjoining lands are open for fishing, and, in some cases, hunting, but not hiking. Hiking is only allowed on designated hiking areas that are usually distant from the reservoirs.
Is hunting allowed in hiking areas?
Yes, in most hiking areas, hunting is also allowed. Hikers are advised to avoid hunting areas and are strongly encouraged to wear safety orange during hunting seasons.
Can I bring my dog on a hike?
Dogs are generally allowed on City-owned lands but they must be well-behaved and controllable. Any animal waste should be promptly cleaned up and removed.
Do all areas open for hiking have trails?
No, not all areas open for hiking have trails. Our Interactive Recreation Area Map is a great tool for finding hiking trails on DEP lands.
Hikers are encouraged to research the area before visiting. To view PDF maps of all DEP Recreation Units, visit Recreation.
