(Long Island City, NY – December 20, 2019) The NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) STEAM education initiative announced today that applications are being accepted for DDC’s 2020 High School Summer Internship Program. Students interested in the paid internship should submit their application and supporting materials by February 7.

The High School Summer Internship Program is organized in partnership with the NYC Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD) Ladders for Leaders program and the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). The six-week program is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in architecture, engineering, building trades, public administration, business administration or information technology, and is a unique opportunity to prepare students for the growing demands of the job market and to learn about what it takes to build infrastructure and public buildings in New York City.

“Our High School Summer Internship Program is designed to expose young people to careers in the STEAM professions and also to provide them with an opportunity to get hands on experience,” said DDC Deputy Commissioner for Community Partnerships and STEAM Initiatives Lee Llambelis. “With field assignments, supervisor mentors, site visits to DDC projects, and training seminars, students will learn first-hand how a world class city gets built and they will have experiences that will help them throughout their careers.”

Last summer, high school interns attended numerous project sites including the new firehouse for Rescue 2 in Brooklyn; the construction of Corona Plaza in Queens; phase one of the reconstruction of the streets in Rosedale, Queens; and the creation of Gansevoort Plaza in Manhattan. Students also took part of various workshops including College Preparedness, Resume Building and Mock Interviews to prepare for college and future interviews. This was the fifth year of DDC’s High School Summer Internship program, which has mentored 143 high school students to date.

Students that are not eligible for the internship through Ladders for Leaders can also apply for the internship through SYEP when the application becomes available early 2020. For up to date information on when the application becomes available, click here.

The 30 students selected must be in high school and at least 16 years of age. The internship begins at DDC’s headquarters in Long Island City on Monday, July 6 and ends on Friday, August 14. For more information on the program, click here.
