Ribbon Cutting: Stapleton Branch Library

June 11, 2013

On June 11th, Deputy Commissioner Resnick joined members of DDC’s Public Buildings team along with other government and elected officials, local residents, and the U.S. Coast Guard to reopen the expanded Stapleton Library.

"The new Stapleton branch combines the best elements of the original Carnegie library building with a light-filled, modern addition. This happy marriage of historic and new elements has more than doubled the library’s public space, created a welcoming entrance, and brought the library into the 21st century," said Deputy Commissioner David Resnick.

The expansion of the existing Carnegie library building, built in 1907, has more than doubled (to 12,000 square feet) the library’s usable space. The Carnegie building’s exterior and interior have been respectfully renovated, with entirely new mechanical and electrical systems. The original structure now houses an entrance and lobby, circulation desk, adult and young adult collections, community room, staff offices, and a work room – all in an open, airy interior filled with natural light. The new addition, with a graceful, upward sweeping roof, glazed curtain wall, and inviting entrance, is intended to enhance the public’s awareness of the library along Wright Street.
