Non-portable grills, such as permanent or fixed grills, piped to natural gas are regulated under the NYC Fuel Gas Code Section 623. Permanently located natural gas grills and associated piping must be installed by a New York City Licensed Master Plumber (LMP) in accordance with the NYC Fuel Gas Code and filed with the Department by a Registered Design Professional.
Portable outdoor barbecues burning charcoal, powered by electricity, or fueled by liquid propane gas (LPG) containers or piped natural gas are regulated under the NYC Fire Code. Gas piping for portable natural gas barbecues shall be installed by a NYC LMP in accordance with the NYC Fuel Gas Code. Contact the New York City Fire Department for requirements for portable grills.
