Non-Portable Natural Gas Barbecues

Non-portable grills, such as permanent or fixed grills, piped to natural gas are regulated under the NYC Fuel Gas Code Section 623. Permanently located natural gas grills and associated piping must be installed by a New York City Licensed Master Plumber (LMP) in accordance with the NYC Fuel Gas Code and filed with the Department by a Registered Design Professional.

Portable Charcoal, Electric, Liquid Propane Gas and Natural Gas Barbecues

Portable outdoor barbecues burning charcoal, powered by electricity, or fueled by liquid propane gas (LPG) containers or piped natural gas are regulated under the NYC Fire Code. Gas piping for portable natural gas barbecues shall be installed by a NYC LMP in accordance with the NYC Fuel Gas Code. Contact the New York City Fire Department for requirements for portable grills.

Tips for Safe Grilling

  • Never grill indoors with equipment intended for outdoor use.
  • It’s illegal and dangerous to store or use any kind of grill on a fire escape.
  • Have immediate access to a fire extinguisher, hose, water barrel or sand when grilling.
  • Keep all barbecues at least 10 feet from anything that can easily catch fire, including building walls, deck surfaces, furniture or other items.
  • Be careful when using an electric grill, since grease can drip into the heating coils and ignite.
  • Hire a New York City Licensed Master Plumber (LMP) to install a natural gas grill.
