Dr. Lauren Stossel is a licensed clinical and forensic psychiatrist with nearly 10 years of experience working with people involved in the criminal legal system. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan University and then completed medical school at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She completed her residency training in Psychiatry at Weill Cornell, and a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at NYU.
In 2018, she began working at Rikers as a supervising psychiatrist on a specialized housing unit for individuals with serious mental illness who commit violent infractions in the jail setting. She worked in the New York City jail system for six years in a variety of capacities, including as a Senior Psychiatrist in general population clinics and specialty therapeutic units for seriously mentally ill patients, Director of Psychiatric Education, Medical Director for Mental Health, and most recently as Chief of Mental Health.
Since her departure from Correctional Health Services in 2023, she has been teaching about correctional psychiatry in a variety of settings and completing forensic evaluations as a contractor for BPG Psychological Services PLLC. Her areas of expertise include diagnostic and mitigation evaluation, competence to proceed with adjudication, criminal responsibility/extreme emotional disturbance, violence risk assessment, and mental health-related damages.
In 2024, Dr. Stossel also piloted a clinic focused on ambitious psychotherapy for patients with chronic psychotic disorders at Kings County Hospital where she works part time as an attending psychiatrist.
