Trash Bin Reimbursement Program

The Department of Finance is providing reimbursement for the purchase of one official 45-gallon waste container for all eligible property owners.

Eligibility

Owners of one- and two-family homes who received the School Tax Relief (STAR) property tax exemption or credit in 2024 or 2025 are eligible.

How to get your reimbursement will depend on whether you have already purchased a trash bin.

You must request your reimbursement by June 1, 2026.

How will I know if I am eligible for the trash bin reimbursement?
All owners of one- and two-family homes who received the School Tax Relief (STAR) or Enhanced STAR benefit in 2024 or 2025 are eligible.

The Department of Finance will send a letter to all eligible owners with instructions for claiming the reimbursement.

If you believe you are eligible, but did not receive a letter from the Department of Finance, please visit www.nyc.gov/freetrashbins for more information, or contact us.

When will I receive my trash bin reimbursement check?
If you purchased your bin at www.bins.nyc directly from the manufacturer (Otto) prior to December 31, 2025, you will receive a check within six weeks. If you did not receive a check by the end of February, please contact us.

If you bought a bin in person or through a third-party delivery partner (DoorDash, Instacart, Uber Eats) and submitted a reimbursement request using your voucher, you will receive a check within six weeks.

My check was damaged. How can I get a replacement check?
If the check you receive is damaged, please send it to the mailing address below. Rather than send you a new check, we will add the reimbursement as a credit to your property tax account.
