The New York Twist

The New York Twist can save a life.

As part of TLC’s ongoing safety mission – and as a proud Vision Zero partner agency – we are educating the public on the best way to exit a rideshare vehicle. It goes like this:

  1. When exiting the vehicle, use your far hand to reach for the handle
  2. This forces you to look over shoulder for oncoming cyclists
  3. When it’s clear, open the door and safely exit

The method – also known as the "Dutch Reach" because it’s widely used in Holland – demonstrates a fast, easy movement people can do to ensure they have a good view of incoming cyclists. The move forces passengers and drivers to automatically turn and look back.

Watch the video above to get the hang of it – and don’t forget that reaching for your car door handle with your far hand can save a life!
