The Communications Associate Corps Member at the Public Engagement Unit will work Monday – Friday from 10am – 6pm. Our office is located at 253 Broadway in downtown Manhattan.
City Service Corps, an AmeriCorps program launched in 2015 by NYC Service, a division of the Mayor’s office, recruits individuals to serve full-time from September 2024 - June 2025 at City agency host sites, including the Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit. City Service Corps is comprised of high-impact service projects led by city agencies in impact areas addressing critical capacity and community-related issues. Job Description
Communications Associate
PLEASE NOTE: The duties and responsibilities in this service position description may be subject to change. In the rare event that there are any changes, the member will be notified prior to beginning the service year and the position description will be amended. All changes will be reviewed and approved by NYC Service in advance.
Goal of Project:
The Communications Associate will play a critical role in helping support the office's daly press activities to ensure that more New Yorkers know about the City's resources and benefits, including but not limited to writing press releases, preparing Executive leadership briefings, drafting quotes, keeping track of PEU in the media, coordinating with jornalists and more.
Activities Include:
Manage Press Relations
- Manage PEU's press inbox
- Flag incoming press requests to relevant team members
- Ensure timely response to requests
Support with written materials for press
- Support the development of community and policy-focused fact sheets, flyers, press releases, statements, quotes, and op-eds, as well as digital and multi-lingual content
- Support agency's response to questions, comments, and concerns received by mainstream press, community and ethnic media press, and constituents
- Develop systems for organizing message memory for key issues and press incoming
Support with PEU events
- Identify event opportunitues for PEU, including community events, speaking engagements, and more, where PEU can attend, speak, or promiote on their social media
- Support planning and executive of PEU events, including social media planning and content creation
- Suppoty preparing staff for PEU events or speaking engagements
Support PEU-wide efforts
- Develop trainings for agency staff on communications and media relations best practices
- Support outreach efforts to New Yorkers to New Yorkers through outreach tactics, including peer-to-peer texting, phone banking, canvassing, and relational organizing
- Assisting staff with special projects and community outreach
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
- Excellent writing, communication, organization, attention to detail and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to take initiative and work with tight deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
- Experience in program/project coordination.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced work environment.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish, Mandarin, Bangla, Arabic, French or Haitian Creole highly preferred.
