Diplomatic Privileges and Immunity

Diplomatic immunity refers to the system of international law that protects individuals affiliated with diplomatic, consular, and international organizations while in a foreign country. The terms of diplomatic immunity are governed by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 1963, and various other international treaties and agreements.

The Mayor's Office for International Affairs regularly works with foreign governments and officials as well as with the U.S. Department of State on issues concerning diplomatic privileges and immunities.

Please note: Diplomatic immunity is important on American soil as this is reciprocated to American diplomats around the world.
