Housing New York

In May 2014, the de Blasio Administration unveiled Housing New York: A Five-Borough, Ten-Year Plan to create and preserve 200,000 high-quality, affordable homes over ten years. The plan outlined a comprehensive set of policies and programs to address the city's affordable housing crisis and retain the diversity and vitality of its neighborhoods. This holistic approach was part of a broader strategy to ensure the long-term affordability, health, and competitiveness of New York City.

Building on the foundation laid through Housing New York, in November 2017 the Administration committed to completing the initial goal of 200,000 affordable homes two years ahead of schedule, by 2022, and generating an additional 100,000 homes over the following four years. To accomplish this accelerated and expanded plan, the administration launched Housing New York 2.0, a roadmap for how the city will help reach a new goal of 300,000 homes by 2026. HNY 2.0 introduces a suite of new initiatives to help thousands more families and seniors afford their rent, buy a first home, and stay in the neighborhoods they love.

HPD was tasked with advancing the goals of Housing New York – a critical pillar of Your Home NYC, Mayor de Blasio's comprehensive approach to helping New Yorkers get, afford, and keep housing in these challenging times. By the end of 2021, HPD and HDC had achieved the plan's goal to create or preserve 200,000 affordable homes. 

Through Housing New York, we took decisive action to build a just, equitable, and prosperous city for future generations to come. With City agencies, counterparts in State and Federal government, elected officials, and partners in the industry, we’ve worked to tackle the city’s affordable housing challenges head on. Progress

Three years in, we published a report of our progress to date: Housing New York: Three Years of Progress. The progress described in the report reflects the unprecedented collaboration of multiple City agencies, our counterparts in the Federal and State governments, and our many partners in the affordable housing community.
