NYCEM Issues Weather Alert for Wednesday Morning Commute Following Historic Snowstorm

Light snowfall and freezing temperatures may cause slick roads and black ice across the city

NEW YORK — New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) has issued a weather alert for Wednesday, February 25. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts low temperatures overnight Tuesday and light snow during the Wednesday morning commute, creating potential for slick roads and black ice.

“The city is working around the clock to get New York City fully back on its feet, but with light snow expected Wednesday morning, we’re encouraging New Yorkers to travel with caution and look out for their neighbors in need,” said Mayor Zohran Mamdani. "Allow yourself extra time for morning commutes, leave more distance between vehicles, and wear proper footwear when walking." 

“This week’s storm brought historic snowfall to New York City, and while we’ve made significant progress clearing our streets and restoring services, we’re not out of the woods yet,” said NYCEM Commissioner Christina Farrell. “We’re expecting light snow during the Wednesday morning commute, which could create dangerous conditions on roads and sidewalks. We’re asking New Yorkers to limit unnecessary travel, plan for extra commute time, and stay informed by signing up for Notify NYC.”

After more than two feet of snow fell across parts of the city, crews continue cleanup operations citywide. While conditions have improved, additional winter weather may create slippery travel conditions early Wednesday. 

NWS forecasts a fast-moving clipper system to pass through New York City between approximately 3:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 25. Light snow is likely, with rain possibly mixing in after 6:00 a.m.

Total accumulation is expected to range from a half-inch to one inch by late Wednesday morning. Snowfall rates are expected to remain light.

High temperatures Wednesday will reach the low 40s, following overnight lows around 30 degrees. With recent snow melt and overnight refreezing, there is potential for black ice on roadways, sidewalks, bridges, and overpasses.

NYCEM urges New Yorkers to:

• Allow extra travel time during the Wednesday morning commute.
• Use caution on untreated or less-traveled roadways.
• Watch for black ice, especially during the early morning hours.
• Walk carefully and wear proper footwear to prevent slips and falls.
• Leave extra distance between vehicles and fully clear snow and ice from cars before driving.
  
  

NYCEM continues to coordinate with city agencies under the Winter Weather Emergency Plan, which remains activated. Sanitation crews will monitor conditions and respond as needed.

New Yorkers are encouraged to sign up for Notify NYC, the City’s free emergency notification system, by texting NOTIFYNYC to 692-692 or calling 311. Alerts are available in 14 languages, including American Sign Languages.
