  • Q: What kind of writing sample should I submit?


    A: The writing sample must be any written piece you authored in the past two years, such as an essay, research paper, blog, or article that is a minimum of 500 to 800 words.

    Q: How many hours do I have to commit per semester?


    A: For the Summer internship, students are required to commit a minimum of 21 hours per week. For the Fall and Spring internships, students are required to commit a minimum of 14 hours per week.

    Q: Are remote options available to interns?


    A: No, remote work options are not available. DOI’s Internship Program is in-person only.

    Q: Do I have to be enrolled in school to qualify?


    A: For the Fall and Spring internship programs, candidates must be currently enrolled - and remain enrolled - in a school or university. For the Summer internship program, candidates are not required to be enrolled in a school or university but must have attended classes during the Spring or be registered for the Fall semester at a college or university.

    Q: Is this a paid internship?


    A: No, DOI’s internship program is unpaid. OMNY cards are provided to cover the cost of travel for eligible participants.

    Q: Are full-time, paid positions guaranteed after the internship?


    A: Getting hired at DOI is not guaranteed upon the completion of an internship.  If positions become available, interns are encouraged to apply for opportunities for which they are eligible.

    Q: Are you affiliated with or are you an extension of the NYPD?


    A: No, the New York City Department of Investigation (DOI) is a separate law enforcement agency from the NYPD. DOI conducts independent investigations that root out corruption, fraud, misconduct, and other wrongdoing from New York City government. DOI does have an Office of the Inspector General for the NYPD, which oversees the NYPD.

    Q: Is there an age requirement / limit?


    A: Interns must be at least 18 years old as of the start of the internship. There is no age limit for an internship.

    Q: Is prior work or law enforcement experience required to apply for the internship?


    A: Prior work or law enforcement experience is NOT required to apply for an internship at DOI. Selection is based on a variety of factors, which include prior experience, skill set, and educational focus.

    Q: Can I get academic credit for my internship?


    A: The decision to award academic credit is based on the policies of the college or university where the student is enrolled. DOI is not involved in this process and the student must arrange any academic credit with their educational institution.
