Talking to Your Doctor
Building a relationship with your doctor, or the doctor of someone you care for, on respect, communication, and trust can lead to better health. Get the most out of your time with your health care providers by following the tips below.
Be Ready for Your Visit
Reach out to the office before your visit or talk to the front desk as soon as you arrive:
- If you will need language interpretation services
- To confirm they have records from other providers
- If they do not, ask how to request them
- To ask if you need to complete any forms before your visit
Bring as many of these items as you can:
- A list of all the medicines you’re taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, herbal, and supplements
- Insurance cards
- Prewritten questions on current health concerns
- Paper or smartphone for taking notes
- Previous medical records
You can keep medication, insurance, and medical history information on a Personal Health Summary card (PDF).
Do Your Best to Take an Active Role
Some people feel nervous visiting the doctor. If you do, try making the visit a conversation:
- You and your doctor discuss your health concerns.
- The doctor examines you, then gives advice and recommends tests and treatments.
- You and your doctor talk about things you don’t understand. Repeat things in your own words: “So I think what you’re saying is… Did I get that right?”
- Ask for written material you can take home to learn more about what you discussed.
Be open about your symptoms and concerns:
- Remember that your health is worth your provider’s time.
- Mention any concerns about your emotional well-being. This affects your physical health and is just as important as any other health problem.
- If you have trouble reading or understanding numbers, it helps to tell your provider so they can provide the best possible care
- Tell your provider if you’re concerned about the cost of your medicines. Lower cost medicines or programs may be available.
After Your Visit
Your doctor should:
- Make you feel comfortable
- Respond to your concerns
- Provide the same level of care regardless of what information you share
If your doctor makes you feel uncomfortable or is not responsive, consider finding a new provider.
