This is the Largest Correction Officer Graduating Class Since 2019.

EAST ELMHURST, NY – New York City Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Kaz Daughtry and City Department of Correction Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie will preside over a graduation ceremony for 167 new Correction Officers and a promotion ceremony for 23 Assistant Deputy Wardens on Friday, September 12 at 10 A.M. at Queens College’s Kupferberg Center. At the ceremony, the agency will also recognize 15 staff members who completed training as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). The event will also feature the swearing-in and appointments of 4 new senior agency leaders. 9 DOC staff will be honored at the event.

“These newest members of the Boldest are taking on one of the toughest jobs in law enforcement but also one of the most rewarding,” said NYC Correction Commissioner Maginley-Liddie. “These new members of service, and longtime staff members who are being honored and rising today, join a group of people who have been committed to enhancing safety through supervision and positive role-modeling for the 130 years of our agency’s history. When these staff members take their oaths, they are serving their fellow citizens, the people of this city, in our ongoing work to enhance public safety, and make the jails humane places for all who work and live there.”

The new correction officers completed a 15-week training program at the state-of-the-art NYPD Academy in College Point, Queens and the Correction Academy in Middle Village, Queens. The new correction officer recruits will now receive additional weeks of field training inside New York City jails – under the supervision of veteran field training officers – where they will obtain critical hands-on experience.

The newly promoted Assistant Deputy Wardens (ADWs) successfully completed a six-week intensive training program focused on leadership, operations, and critical decision-making. Over the course of the training, they engaged in scenario-based exercises, crisis response simulations, experiential learning modules, and guided field training assignments, applying classroom instruction directly to real-world correctional challenges. The training equipped the new ADWs with knowledge, practical skills, and confidence to respond effectively to medical emergencies, deliver critical care under pressure, and serve as essential resources to both the Department and the community.

The uniformed and non-uniformed staff members who have recently completed the rigorous New York State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification course trained as part of a 150+ hour program. The comprehensive instruction covered patient assessment, medical and trauma care, life-saving interventions, and pre-hospital emergency operations, reinforced through hands-on skills labs, simulations, and clinical/field experience. This intensive training has equipped them with the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence to respond effectively to medical emergencies, deliver critical care under pressure, and serve as essential resources to both the Department and the community.
