THE CORRECTION DEPARTMENT TO SWEAR IN 301 NEW RECRUITS

New Class Continues the Department’s Momentum, Marking the Second Record-Breaking Class of 2025

College Point, N.Y. – The NYC Department of Correction (DOC) will host a swearing-in ceremony on Thursday, December 11th at 2:00 p.m. at the New York City Police Academy in College Point, Queens, for 301 Correction Officer recruits – a class that will surpass the 182 recruits sworn in on May 30, 2025, which at the time was the largest recruit class since before the pandemic (February 2019). Today’s ceremony marks another significant milestone in the Department’s ongoing recruitment and staffing efforts.
 
“This milestone reflects our commitment to strengthening our ranks with dedicated, professional, and compassionate individuals,” said NYC Correction Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie. “In May, we welcomed 182 recruits – and today we will swear in 301 more. That growth demonstrates the continued interest of New Yorkers to serve their city, and it strengthens our ability to promote public safety. We are proud to support these recruits as they begin the rigorous training that will prepare them to be part of New York’s Boldest.” 

After they are sworn in, the recruits will take advantage of the Department’s ongoing partnership with the NYPD by training at their state-of-the-art facility in College Point. Their training will include lessons from nationally recognized corrections professionals, de-escalation techniques, conflict resolution, suicide prevention, defensive tactics, law, jail procedure, firearms, CPR, fire safety, and more. 

At the end of their academy training, the recruits will be sworn in as Correction Officers at a graduation ceremony. Their training will then continue for several more weeks on Rikers Island for an immersive field training experience under the guidance and mentorship of veteran officers.
