The CCRB maintains a Policy Unit that is comprised of data analysts and lawyers dedicated to gathering data and developing data-driven solutions to policy challenges that impact the CCRB. This unit primarily focuses on implementing a portfolio of policy initiatives related to the CCRB's mission of investigating, mediating, and prosecuting complaints of the public against police officers of the New York City Police Department. The Policy Unit provides monthly statistical reports, annual and semi-annual reports, as well as issue-based reports on topics related to police misconduct. Since fall 2015, the Policy Unit has expanded public access to the CCRB’s complaint data through new and improved monthly statistical reports meant to assist readers in navigating the data. In addition, the Unit began making the Agency’s rich body of data available to the public through its new Data Transparency Initiative.
