Living Safely Campaign

The Living Safely Campaign is multi-lingual campaign created to alert both tenants and property owners to the dangers of illegal apartments and substandard conditions.

Each heating season a team of Department Inspectors and members from our Community Programming & Engagement Unit distribute flyers to remind residents about simple strategies to live safely. The information is available in various languages:

  • Use BIS
    Before leasing to potential renters verify the building can be legally occupied as a multiple dwelling. Research the history of the building, including violations and permits, and check that required safety measures are present. You can research the building's information on the Department's Buildings Information System (BIS).
  • Local Law 110 of 2019 Tenant Information
    Building owners must post a copy of a DOB/OATH summons in the lobby of the building that was issued a violating condition. Owners must distribute a copy of a DOB/OATH Summons to the tenant(s) of the occupied dwelling unit and any adjacent occupied dwelling units where the violating condition occurred. Print the flyer.
